As a Summer Law Student, Malek is assisting lawyers on a wide variety of tasks within our Business and Disputes groups.

Malek Amr has amassed a broad range of experience before summering at BLG. At the Market Regulation division of the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC), Malek contributed to a diverse array of files related to fintech, digital assets, investment funds, securities, and mergers & acquisitions (M&A). His work was instrumental in drafting legal assessments for high-profile M&A transactions, conducting compliance reviews of investment funds, and examining discretionary relief applications for innovative fintech and digital asset platforms. During his work term, Malek demonstrated exemplary results in effectively conducting quality research, preparing memorandums, and finding innovative solutions for his principals.

Before pursuing law school, Malek earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Calgary and significantly contributed to youth and community services in Calgary, demonstrating a strong commitment to leadership and community engagement. During his undergraduate studies, Malek devoted two years to neuroscience research at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, specifically focusing on epilepsy and neuropsychology. He investigated the effects of post-ictal hypoxia on working memory in animal models. This research culminated in the production of two thesis projects, which cultivated Malek’s ability to creatively problem-solve and think critically.

Prior to law school, Malek also worked as a Youth & Child Counsellor at Hull Services, where he advocated and provided crucial support to vulnerable youth. In this role, Malek excelled in providing excellent client service by building trust and actively listening to each client’s unique concerns. His efforts in counseling, crisis communication, risk management, and personalized intervention strategies not only enhanced client outcomes but also earned him the recognition of Staff of the Year.

Malek continues to remain involved in the community as a volunteer for the Pro Bono Students Canada’s Consent Project.

Malek was drawn to BLG for its commitment to excellence, innovation, and collaboration. Known for being a highly entrepreneurial firm, BLG thrives on training lawyers who ultimately become trusted advisors. The quality of leadership, mentorship, collegial work environment, and focus on career development were key factors that reinforced his decision to join the BLG team. As a firm with the resources and training of a large national firm yet maintaining a cohesive team and strong local presence in Calgary, BLG offers the ideal setting for Malek to pursue his passion for corporate law.

In his spare time, Malek trains Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is a passionate fan of mixed martial arts. He is also an avid reader who appreciates diverse literary genres. Malek also enjoys working out, swimming, and playing soccer. Additionally, he relishes being outdoors, especially hiking in the mountains during the summer season. Additionally, Malek enjoys traveling as it provides him with opportunities to explore new cultures, landscapes, and experiences whenever possible.
