Vancouver (October 21, 2024) - Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to welcome Haig Oghigian, FCIArb, as Senior Counsel.
With his significant legal, business and international expertise, Haig will bring a unique perspective to our Arbitration Group.
Haig has extensive experience as an international arbitrator and arbitration counsel. He has appeared before and sat as an arbitrator on panels and arbitral courts across Europe, Asia and North and South America, and has extensive experience in a variety of arbitral venues.
Haig has acted as counsel, arbitrator and mediator in a variety of sectors, and has appeared in over 50 cases as both counsel and arbitrator before, among many other institutions, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (JCAA) and the American Arbitration Association (AAA). With over 30 years of experience as counsel, he has broad experience in commercial disputes (joint venture agreements, distribution agreements, licencing agreements, etc.), construction and engineering, M&A, pharmaceuticals and life sciences.

Haig has practiced at large Canadian and International law firms, and acted as General Counsel, Special Advisor and Vice-Consul in government and industry. Haig has taught at the University of Tokyo, University of Rikkyo and University of British Columbia faculties of Law. He is fluent in English, French and Japanese. He is a frequent editor and contributor to The Law of Commerce in Japan.
Haig graduated from the McGill University, Faculty of Law – Civil and Common Law in 1979. He then went on to study at Harvard University, in their East Asian Legal Studies Graduate and Research Program in 1986, then on to the U.S. Department of State, Foreign Service Institute in Yokohama, Japan where he received a Diploma in Japanese Language Studies in 1986. He also received his Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration from Keble College in Oxford, U.K. in 1998.
