The opportunity

BLG Beyond is interested in working with skilled document review freelance lawyers. BLG Beyond Legal Talent (“BLT”) is BLG Beyond’s flexible legal resourcing service.

We are looking for readily available legal professionals with experience in document review and analysis for eDiscovery or due diligence projects. Freelance with BLG Beyond Legal Talent and get the best of both worlds: flexibility combined with the support of Canada’s largest law firm. You will have the opportunity to enjoy remote work flexibility, with the ability to work from anywhere within the province(s) of your call to bar.

Experience & qualifications

• 2+ years’ professional experience in a law firm or in-house legal team
• 2+ years’ experience in eDiscovery and/or due diligence document review
• Proficiency with technology, including demonstrated experience using Relativity, Diligen or similar legal tech to electronically review documents in complex matters
• Excellent project management and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail
• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent law degree
• Membership in good standing with the Law Society in any of the following jurisdictions: Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. Must have the legal right to work in Canada
• A current practicing certificate and current errors and omissions insurance coverage from your relevant provincial law society
• Be willing and able to provide your services as an independent contractor through your own company
• Previous experience as a freelance lawyer working on project-based assignments is a plus
• High speed internet access and home office set up for seamless remote work capabilities

Key document review tasks:

• Electronically reviewing documents in complex litigation matters using Relativity
• Assisting with quality control, preparation of privilege and redaction logs
• Providing valuable insight into the discovery process in different areas of litigation
• Reviewing and coding documents for responsiveness, relevancy, confidentiality and privilege
• Reviewing key aspects of the litigation in order to make judgment calls on the relevancy of a document, given the issues at hand

Experience & Qualifications

• A minimum of 2 years of experience post completion of articling at either an established law firm or in-house
• Your approach: Highly motivated, professional, organized, detail oriented and exceptional research and drafting skills
• Service-oriented: You are client-centric and focused on achieving great results
• Flexible and adaptable: You are able to jump into new projects quickly
• Language: Bilingual in English and French would be an asset but not required
• Practical and tech-savvy: You are confident with technology
• Reliable and organized: You are largely self-sufficient and have a keen understanding that keeping up to date with administration is a critical part of your work as an independent contractor
• Canadian Bar Status: Membership in good standing with the Law Society in any of the following jurisdictions: Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. Must have the legal right to work in Canada
• Degree requirement: Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent law degree
• Location of work: Work will be completed remotely or in a hybrid environment, depending on client requirements. You must have high speed internet access and home office set up for seamless remote work capabilities.
