Pre-eminent international trade lawyer Rambod Behboodi joins BLG as Senior Counsel

Ottawa (June 12, 2024) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to welcome pre-eminent international trade lawyer Rambod Behboodi as Senior Counsel in the Corporate & Capital Markets group.

Rambod Behboodi is one of Canada’s most knowledgeable and highly regarded international trade lawyers, who has been advising on complex trade-related issues for over 30 years at the highest levels of the Canadian government, within the World Trade Organization (WTO), and as a partner in the international trade law group at a major global law firm in Geneva. Rambod has extensive experience in international trade law as a legal and policy advisor, litigator, public advocate, and diplomat, as well as extensive experience in financial sector regulation and international relations. He has advised on and argued North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and WTO cases, has served on postings with the WTO and the European Commission in Geneva and Brussels, participated in multilateral environmental negotiations, and advised on issues including agricultural trade, subsidies and antidumping, export controls, and technical barriers to trade. Rambod has served as Counsel in the Privy Council Office and as General Counsel and Executive Director, General Legal Services of Canada’s Department of Finance for a number of years, where he was the head of legal services responsible for directing and supervising the provision of strategic and legal advice on several business lines of the Department of Finance, including trade negotiation, financial institution regulation and financial sector stability measures, transactions supporting the National Debt and the Exchange Fund Account, Crown financial institution oversight, and the federal pension regime.

Rambod was also the Canadian Competition Bureau’s first Deputy Commissioner of the Competition Promotion Branch, where he was responsible for economic advocacy, international negotiations, strategic planning and communications. He is the author of a book on international trade law and numerous articles and presentations on international law and international economic regulation, and has taught international economic and trade law in various universities in Canada and Europe.
