January 19, 2022 - The U.K. government’s Department for International Trade (DIT) has awarded a contract to Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), in consortium with TLT LLP in the U.K. and McDermott Will & Emery in the U.S., to advise on the U.K.’s upcoming free trade agreement negotiations with India.
This contract follows the consortium’s appointment in August 2021 to advise DIT on the U.K.’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and bilateral free trade agreements with Canada and Mexico.
The consortium was selected from among firms appointed to the UK government’s Trade Law Panel in February 2021. Both contracts and that initial appointment followed competitive processes that assessed firms’ subject matter expertise and ability to deliver value and seamless service.
In delivering on the new mandate, the consortium will draw on the local knowledge of two top Indian law firms, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and Economic Laws Practice, both headquartered in Mumbai.
Matthew Kronby, partner in BLG’s International Trade and Investment practice, will lead the project for the consortium. “We are delighted by this latest appointment,” he said. “It speaks to the depth of the consortium’s expertise in international trade law and government advisory work. This will be a complex project and an important opportunity for the U.K. to expand its trade agreement network. We are grateful to have been chosen to assist the U.K. government in achieving its goals.”
