Calgary (October 21, 2024) - Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is excited to welcome Cecilia Hoover as a partner in our Disputes Group.
Cecilia has specialized disputes knowledge as a prolific and multifaceted disputes lawyer, with a particular expertise in insurance defence and coverage. Formerly a managing partner of the Calgary office of a national insurance firm, she brings 20 years of national disputes experience in complex commercial disputes in various industries, including insurance, construction and health care.
Cecilia is regularly sought out by global and domestic insurers to provide complex coverage advice and to represent their interests in coverage disputes pertaining to commercial general liability, course of construction builders risk, wrap-up liability, errors and omissions policies, environment impairment liability and commercial property policies.
Cecilia has experience defending project participants involved in large construction disputes including design professionals, contractors, sub-trades and developers.
Cecilia also regularly defends health care providers against medical negligence claims, and has represented physicians, surgeons and paramedical service providers in the context of regulatory proceedings and civil proceedings. She also provides advice and defence to professionals and private and public entities of all sizes against allegations of harassment and abuse as well as advice and defence on employment liability.
Cecilia is an experienced trial lawyer, having conducted trials in Ontario and Alberta. She has also successfully mediated and arbitrated complex multi-party disputes with successful outcomes for her clients.
She is the first lawyer in Canada to successfully argue a summary dismissal of a negligence claim on the basis that an “e-waiver” was enforceable.

Cecilia obtained her LLB from York University – Osgoode Hall Law School. She was called to the bar in Ontario in 2006 and in Alberta in 2011. Cecilia’s specialized disputes experience spans 20 years including at national and regional firms.
