Mathieu Piché-Messier named judge of the Superior Court of Québec for the district of Montréal
Montréal (Sept. 24, 2024) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) congratulates Partner Mathieu Piché-Messier on his appointment to the role of judge at the Superior Court of Québec for the district of Montréal.
“Mathieu has shown outstanding skills in both civil and commercial litigation for years,” said John Murphy, BLG’s National Managing Partner and CEO. “He will bring a wealth of knowledge to the bench in Québec, after successfully defending clients before a variety of courts in Québec and Canada over his 25-year career.”
Mathieu began his career at BLG as a member of the firm’s Disputes Group in 2000, becoming regional Practice Group Leader in 2014 and National Business Leader, Commercial Litigation, in 2020. He has represented clients before the Superior Court, the Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, and various administrative tribunals in Québec. Mathieu has practiced in a wide array of areas, including commercial fraud, high technology, industrial espionage, defamation law, entertainment law, international arbitration, and several more, and is a household name with extraordinary remedies such as Anton Piller, Mareva and Norwich injunctions and orders. He was also a member of the parliamentary committees of the National Assembly responsible for reform of the Québec Code of Civil Procedure.
He was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) in 2018; as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsels of America in 2021; and was named Advocatus Emeritus (Ad. E.) by the Barreau du Québec in 2022.
His extensive community work includes having served on the boards of the Québec Bar, the Montréal Bar and the Canadian Bar Association, Québec Division. He was president of the Centre d'accès à l'Information juridique du Québec (CAIJ) and of the Young Bar Association of Montréal, and has sat on the boards of Cirque Éloize, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, Enfants-retour and Make-a-Wish.
