Toronto (May 29, 2024) – Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) appointed Lisa Chamandy as the firm’s new Chief AI Officer (CAIO), a new role among Canadian law firms. The creation of this position aligns with BLG’s desire to invest in a highly strategic area and underscores the firm’s commitment to continue leading the profession.
In her previous position as Chief Knowledge & Innovation Officer, Lisa advanced various innovation initiatives across the firm, including investments in legal technology and legal process improvement, as well as initial ventures in AI. Her new role will now see her responsible for leading the strategy on AI at BLG, which includes making strategic recommendations on AI-related business opportunities, risk mitigation, financial investments, technology implementation, education and adoption, go-to-market strategy and data management. She will also serve as a valuable resource for clients seeking to benefit from the potential of generative AI.
“As generative AI continues to gain momentum across industries, BLG sees an additional opportunity to stay ahead of the curve by considering the technological developments and more importantly, what this means for Canadian businesses. We understand how new AI capabilities are expected to impact not only our clients, but also the legal market, our own practices and operations,” summarizes John Murphy, National Managing Partner and CEO. “The creation of our CAIO role reflects BLG’s time-proven, purposeful approach in embracing emerging technologies safely and responsibly.”
To further support this strategic turning point, BLG has set up an AI Steering Committee, responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the firm’s overarching AI strategy; as CAIO, Lisa will chair this new committee. Her deep knowledge of our firm and its clients will prove invaluable, as BLG further expands its capabilities and continues to deliver exceptional client service.
