Sonya Savage, KC looks forward to helping BLG clients navigate the changing regulatory and policy environment
Calgary (September 25, 2023) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) welcomes Sonya Savage as Senior Counsel.
After several years in provincial politics in Alberta, Ms. Savage is looking forward to getting back to her roots while bringing her knowledge and experience to BLG clients. As Alberta’s former Minister of Energy, Savage comes to BLG with extensive experience in government, the private sector and law. Prior to her election as an MLA in 2019, Savage worked in senior executive roles with the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association and Enbridge. Savage’s time in the energy industry combined with her years of experience in government make her an incredible addition to the firm and an exceptional resource for clients.
"I am looking forward to getting back to private practice and sharing my expertise with BLG clients,” said Sonya Savage, Senior Counsel at BLG. “BLG’s national platform, strong team and client relationships make it an ideal choice. It’s a natural progression for me to move from implementing energy policy to helping clients navigate that policy and build towards success. The energy industry is transforming and transitioning quickly, and I look forward to using my experience to help current and new BLG clients navigate rapidly changing regulations and emerging trends.”
During her four years as a senior minister in Alberta Government, Savage served as Minister of Energy, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, and Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. Among her successes were the development and release of Alberta’s 2023 climate strategy, as well as the development of Alberta’s legal, policy and fiscal frameworks in new and emerging growth areas such as carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), hydrogen, critical minerals and more.
Savage is widely recognized for her ability to navigate and balance energy security and climate interests in an evolving landscape. She has an extensive background and expertise in developing and implementing climate and energy policies, legislation and regulation. Her experience is a unique combination of expertise in government, private sector and energy and environmental law.
“Sonya is a tremendous asset to our BLG team and to BLG clients in Alberta and across Canada,” said Alan Ross, KC, Regional Managing Partner, BLG. “Her combined knowledge and experience gives her a unique perspective and understanding of the energy industry which is of great benefit to our clients.”
