Executive Summary

Curtis Behmann is a partner, professional engineer and registered Canadian and US patent agent in our Intellectual Property Group. With over 20 years of experience, he provides strategic business-focused counsel to innovators and their business partners.

Curtis has been repeatedly recognized in international ranking publications, including as one of the world's leading patent practitioners in the IAM Patent 1000, and as a Managing IP Star.

Curtis specializes in the drafting and prosecution of high-tech and mechanical patents and industrial designs in various industries including wireless technology, semiconductors, security, financial/business methods, digital media and entertainment, consumer products, medical devices, water treatment, oil & gas, automotive and transportation. Fluently bilingual in English and French, he assists clients in both official languages. He is a member of BLG`s Innovation Thought Leadership Committee and Autonomous Vehicles Group.

Curtis also specializes in industrial design protection. He is the chair of Canada's Industrial Design Practice Committee, and the Canadian representative on the AIPPI International Standing Committee on Designs.

Curtis is a former Senior Patent Examiner at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

  • Advising entrepreneurs, innovators and corporations on global patent strategy and portfolio management.
  • Industrial design protection in Canada and the US and internationally.
  • Providing opinions regarding patentability, infringement, validity and IP due diligence issues to enable clients to make informed strategic business decisions.
  • As CIPO patent examiner, examined patent applications relating to emerging Internet and wireless technologies, data-switching networks, fiber-optic networks and related protocols, architectures, software and hardware.
