On April 8, 2008, the Government of British Columbia introduced Bill 20, the Oil and Gas Activities Act. The Act purports to streamline the numerous statutes and regulations presently governing the rights and responsibilities of the petroleum and natural gas industry in B.C., while strengthening environmental standards, forming an appeal tribunal for decisions of the Oil and Gas Commission (“OGC”) and introducing a number of new compliance and enforcement measures. To this end, the Act would repeal the Oil and Gas Commission Act, the Pipeline Act and parts of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Act and consolidate the powers and duties of the OGC.
