Purpose of the Role

The Financial Analyst, Legal Operations will report to the National Director – Practice Management, Specialized Litigation and source work primarily from the Senior Manager(s), Client Service & Innovation and the HIROC Project Portfolio Manager. The Analyst will be expected to identify strategic opportunities with key clients where we can reduce revenue (and profitability) leakage by modifying how we manage matters, legal portfolios and internal levers in addition to positioning our services and pricing in a manner that expands the service areas through which we serve these clients. This role will also develop reporting for key clients that takes advantage of the operational improvements driven by the Client Service & Innovation Manager and existing processes. For example, the incumbent would analyze trends by phase and task code, by matter complexity level (where this exists) to derive more relevant insights into how key client portfolios are run.

Service excellence and strong financial acumen must be delivered consistently while executing on the following priorities:

  • Delivering timely and accurate ad hoc reports for key clients to the Senior Manager(s), Client Service & Innovation that are easy to read, clear in presentation, highlight key metrics and foster constructive discussion on opportunities for legal operations improvement
  • Undertaking deep-dive analysis of actual performance against budgets, phase and task code docket trends and developing relevant insights to help guide behavior and drive change
  • Ongoing continuous improvement around Financial Reporting and Analysis activities driving industry best practice and national consistency.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role are:

Legal Operations Analysis

  • Support the Client Service & Innovation Manager(s) in developing client specific scorecards to assess how the internal team of lawyers is performing against benchmarks outlined in our client agreements, including (but not limited to):
      • Realization analysis
      • Blended rate analysis
      • Leverage & staffing analysis
      • Rate increase analysis
      • Cross-sell analysis (by client)
      • Profitability analysis (by client)
      • Working capital & accounts receivable analysis (by client)
  • Manages and performs day-to-day administration and monitoring of firm compliance with clients’ interim financial reporting needs
  • Advises Client Service & Innovation Manager(s) on leverage/staffing strategies to increase the effectiveness and profitability of our pricing on key client portfolios
  • Models data to derive insights where we can better manage internal levers to enhance profitability and reduce revenue leakage, on a client by client basis

Matter & Legal Portfolio Reporting

  • Develop regular automated reporting at the client portfolio level for an overarching and matter by matter view of actual performance against budget
  • Prepare forecasting report to extrapolate actual matter performance against budget for the lifecycle of the matter, with roll-up reporting by client
  • Perform prospective/predictive analysis and modeling to determine the impact of proposed initiatives for key client portfolios, including how to price the portfolio with new staffing profiles and/or additional practice groups providing legal services

Pricing & AFA Modelling

  • Liaises with the Pricing team to develop negotiation and pricing strategies for key clients on complex fee arrangement issues
  • Review and analyze the Firm’s key profitability indicators and determine opportunities to change the structure of our pricing arrangements with key clients in a manner that would be mutually beneficial for the Firm and our client
  • Develop best-practice models to provide financial and strategic analysis for various initiatives including fixed fee proposals, alternative pricing arrangements, business expansion and contraction for key clients
  • Undertakes proactive data mining to identify and explore reasoning for exceptions, strategize new opportunities and risks with key clients

Key Competencies

  • University Degree or Post-Secondary Diploma in Business Administration, Commerce, Economics or a related field
  • Working towards a Professional Accounting Designation (CPA, CA; CPA, CMA or CPA, CGA)
  • Thorough knowledge of financial reports and analysis
  • Previous experience working in a professional services or law firm
  • High level of business acumen
  • Advanced expertise in usage of MS Excel, including but not limited to running and creating queries, developing macros, pivot tables, vlookups, etc.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent ability to take direction and work independently
  • Excellent technical skills required. Superior Excel skills are required. Knowledge of CMS would be an asset.
