Executive Summary

Garett is a senior associate in our Ottawa office practicing in the Environmental, Municipal, Expropriation, and Regulatory Group. Garett advises municipal and corporate clients on matters related to municipal law, land use planning, environmental contamination, real property law and land development. Garett assists with negotiation of favourable resolutions to disputes and advocates for clients before the provincial courts, the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (formerly the Ontario Municipal Board), and other administrative tribunals.

Garett was called to the Bar of the Province of Ontario in 2014 and practiced for two years in a litigation boutique where he gained experience in civil litigation, expropriation, and municipal law before joining BLG. Garett received his Juris Doctor degree from Osgoode Hall Law School (York University) in 2013 and graduated with first class honours from McGill University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Development Studies and a minor in Economics.

Representative Work

  • Acts for both expropriating authorities and land owners in expropriation proceedings before the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal and assists expropriating authorities with all aspects of negotiating real property acquisitions and expropriations for public purposes.
  • Advises municipal clients regarding drafting, amending, and enforcing municipal by-laws.
  • Defends municipal and corporate clients in environmental prosecutions and environmental civil litigation.
  • Prosecutes and defends provincial offences charges in the Ontario Court of Justice.
  • Appears before a variety of local boards and administrative tribunals, such as the Licence Appeal Tribunal.
  • Presents submissions on behalf of clients at municipal council and committee meetings.
