Executive Summary

Kate Crawford is a partner in the health law group at Borden Ladner Gervais. Kate's practice includes civil litigation with a focus on complex medical malpractice actions, administrative law with a special focus on physician credentialing issues, and class action defence. Kate also acts as general counsel to Hospitals, Long Term Care facilities and Retirement Homes, providing strategic day to day advice on risk management and policy issues, and representing them in her capacity as an advocate before tribunals, public inquiries, inquests and other types of proceedings. Kate was named a 2016 Lexpert Rising Star.

Representative Work

  • Representing the Hospital for Sick Children in a proposed class action regarding the work of the Motherisk Drug Testing Laboratory​.
  • Representing the Hospital for Sick Children in the Goudge Inquiry into Paediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario.
  • Scott v. Quinte Health Care Corporation, 2012 CanLII 31018 (ON HPARB) – representing the Hospital at the Health Professionals Appeal and Review Board regarding the privileges of Dr. Peter Scott.
  • Assisting retirement homes in compliance with the Retirement Homes Act and the Residential Tenancies Act.
  • Representing a Hospital in a proposed class action regarding alleged sexual assaults on patients by a member of the professional staff.
  • Representing Hospitals at Coroner's inquests, most recently representing Toronto East General Hospital in the JKE Inquest.
  • Latin v. Hospital for Sick Children, 2007 CanLII 34 (ON SC) – successfully representing Hospital for Sick Children and two nurses in litigation regarding the care provided in the emergency department.
  • Representing Hospital Medical Advisory Committees on matters relating to physician credentialing under the Public Hospitals Act and the institution's bylaws.
