Executive Summary

Jeff Coghlan is a lawyer and patent agent in the Intellectual Property and Technology Group in our Ottawa office. He is also a registered trademark agent.

Jeff focuses his practice on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in a variety of areas, including in the computer, electrical, electronic, and mechanical fields. He has patent drafting and prosecution experience in a number of areas including computer related technologies, telecommunications, wireless communications, memory controllers, optical sensing technologies, touch screens, parallel processing, ad hoc networks, nanotechnologies, microwave sensors, spectral imagery, and mechanical devices. His practice also includes providing patentability opinions, infringement and validity opinions, and advising on other issues relating to intellectual property.

Prior to joining BLG, Jeff practised at an intellectual property boutique firm in Ottawa.

In the past, Jeff has worked as part of an electrical engineering team at an oil upgrader in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta and for a telecom service provider in Galway, Ireland.

Jeff graduated from the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Canada) with a bachelor's degree in computer engineering, and from Queen's University (Kingston, Canada) with a degree in law.

  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications for large, midsized and small clients located domestically and internationally, including in the areas of telecommunications equipment, internet technology, and electronics.
  • Directing the prosecution of patent applications internationally.
  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications for universities, including in the areas of physics and electrical engineering.
