This month, the Ontario Government begins a series of public consultations on the subject of mandatory retirement. The purpose of these consultations is not to debate the merits of eliminating mandatory retirement – the Minister of Labour has already made it clear that Ontarians should be allowed to continue working as long as they are willing and able to do so. Instead, the consultations will focus on how best to legislate the unravelling of employment policies, practices and union agreements that are predicated on a retirement age of 65.
