Toronto (December 24, 2014) — Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce that it has been listed as a recommended firm in the 15th edition of the Global Competition Review's (GCR) 100. Two BLG partners, Robert S Russell and Subrata Bhattacharjee are also profiled in the publication.

The GCR 100 is an extensive qualitative analysis of the world’s leading competition and antitrust law practices with the publication profiling the best practices worldwide across 39 jurisdictions.

Robert S Russell is the head of BLG’s antitrust practice. He has served as senior litigation counsel in matters involving commercial disputes, class action proceedings, shareholders’ remedies, commercial torts, civil actions under the Competition Act, securities law, technology law and contracts. He has also been engaged by multi-national clients in matters involving the co-ordination and strategic planning of parallel class proceedings in Canada and the United States. Robert led the BLG team that advised Loblaw Companies Limited on some of the competition issues it faced as part of its $12.4 billion cash and stock acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation.

Subrata Bhattacharjee is the national vice chair of BLG’s Competition and Foreign Investment Review Group. His practice focuses on all aspects of competition/antitrust law, foreign investment law and regulatory litigation, including quasi-criminal and constitutional matters. Subrata has defended clients in major international and domestic cartel investigations, cleared major mergers in virtually all industry sectors, and provided advice on other contentious and compliance matters under the Canadian Competition Act. His clients include major firms such as Samsung, Korean Airlines and Hitachi. Subrata is also actively involved in the firm’s International Business practice with particular emphasis on East and South Asia.

BLG’s Anti-Trust and Competition Law Group provides experienced counsel for a wide range of situations including class actions, mergers, acquisitions, litigation, dominance and marketplace competition and compliance, along with all issues related to the Competition Act.

BLG’s Competition and Foreign Investment Review Group advises clients on all aspects of the Competition Act and Investment Canada Act; from obtaining approval of major transactions to navigating complex criminal investigations. The group offers unique insight as a result of having acted on a number of matters for the Attorney General of Canada and the Commissioner of Competition.
