Toronto (December  11, 2014) —  Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) congratulates Chidinma Thompson on garnering a Young Women in Energy (YWE) 2014 award.

This the inaugural year for the YWE award which recognizes female executives and professionals in the energy sector who consistently demonstrate leadership, and act as role models and catalysts for change. Winners were chosen by a selection committee consisting of representatives of Alberta’s top energy companies and judged on the specific criteria of professional experience and network advocacy.

Ms. Thompson is a senior associate in BLG’s Calgary office, and a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation group and the Oil and Gas Litigation/Regulatory Focus Group. Her practice is focused on commercial litigation, regulatory law and arbitration, and also has a strong emphasis on energy, natural resources, environmental, and municipal law.

Last year, Ms. Thompson became the first person to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary. Her thesis, “Making federalism through law: Regulating socio-economic challenges of energy development”, examined the quality of infrastructure in Wood Buffalo, a municipality in Alberta, and home to the largest single oil deposit known to exist in the world, and its relationship to the labour shortage inhibiting energy development.

“Everyone at BLG is proud of Ms. Thompson’s accomplishments and both colleagues and clients praise her passion for the energy sector and her commitment to relationship building,” said David Whelan, QC regional managing partner, Calgary. “Ms. Thompson is equally committed to pro bono work within the community and volunteers a significant amount of her time as a legal advisor at various legal clinics in Alberta.”
