Pro Bono Awards

Toronto (September 26, 2014) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce that partner Duncan Marsden is the winner of the 2014 Canadian National Pro Bono Distinguished Service Award from Pro Bono Canada.

The award, which was handed out last night at the 5th National Pro Bono Conference taking place in Regina, recognized Duncan for his outstanding commitment to providing pro bono services throughout his career.

“Pro bono work is part of BLG’s strategic approach to supporting the communities in which we live and work,” said Sean Weir, BLG’s national managing partner and CEO. “At BLG we have some of the brightest legal minds as part of our roster. Through fostering a culture where our lawyers are encouraged to give their most valuable assets, their professional time and their legal expertise, we as a firm can positively impact society, one pro bono client at a time.”

As a partner in the Labour and Employment Group in the firm’s Calgary office, Duncan advises large corporate clients on all aspects of employment law including dismissal procedures, downsizing exercises, reviewing policies and contracts, workers’ compensation matters, drug and alcohol issues, discrimination issues and privacy issues.

“Helping people achieve the justice they deserve is extremely gratifying to me as a lawyer,” said Duncan Marsden. “The ability to facilitate change is why I chose this career. It is what it’s all about.”

Duncan’s pro bono work extends beyond labour and employment law. He works on the behalf of Canadian veterans and he provides legal expertise to clients of Pro Bono Alberta and Volunteer Lawyer Services. Duncan also supports the charitable organization Mito Canada.

“Duncan has a long history of providing pro bono services to a variety of individuals and causes,” said Bruce Churchill-Smith, BLG partner and national chair of BLG’s Pro Bono Committee. “He is someone genuinely driven to enrich his legal career through the pursuit of justice for those that truly need it but are not in a position to afford it.”

The Canadian National Pro Bono Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual Canadian lawyer who has made an outstanding contribution to the provision of pro bono legal services. Recipients of the award must demonstrate leadership and activities related to improving access to justice in their local area, as well as their commitment to pro bono work on behalf of individual clients, communities, or charitable organizations.
