Toronto (June 20, 2014) — Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) marked the 10th anniversary of the firm’s BLG Reads to Kids program, with the launch of a national aboriginal literacy project. During the last year, BLG professionals and staff have volunteered their time and raised approximately $10,000 to support children and youth literacy programs at local friendship centres in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

“Thanks to BLG professionals and staff from across the country, the BLG Read to Kids program has reached the significant milestone of 10 years. During this time staff members and professionals have volunteered thousands of hours to read to children and instill a love of reading,” says Jane Bachynski, chair of BLG Reads to Kids Committee. “We wanted to focus our energy on one community for the 10th anniversary of BLG Reads to Kids, so we decided on Aboriginal literacy and to channel our support to community-driven initiatives through local friendship centres.”

The funds raised by BLG were used to sustain existing programs, and to purchase books and computers that support indigenous culture and language. The Aboriginal Literacy Project benefitted from a variety of professional and staff led fundraising initiatives from a BLG reading bear fundraising drive to a sale of works by aboriginal artists.
