Calgary (Feb. 18, 2014) — Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) partners Colin MacDonald, David Madsen and David Whelan have been appointed Queen’s Counsel, recognizing their outstanding contributions to legal and public life. The designation is conferred on members of the legal profession to recognize exceptional merit, contribution, professional integrity and good character.

“The honour bestowed on Colin, David and David is great recognition of their character and integrity but also of their commitment to the highest levels of professional and community service,” said Sean Weir, national managing partner and CEO of BLG. “It is a distinction that is well deserved.”

Colin counsels on matters of Competition and Foreign Investment Review, Oil and Gas, Corporate Governance and Special Committees, Public Policy and Government Relations, and Business and Corporate Commercial matters.

David Madsen serves clients in matters of Securities Litigation, Oil and Gas, Intellectual Property, Fraud, Corporate Commercial Litigation, Arbitration and Class Actions.

David Whelan practices in the areas of Banking and Financial Services and also provides advice to BLG’s clients on Corporate and Commercial matters. David is also the managing partner for BLG’s Calgary office.

The history of Queen’s Counsel appointments dates back to the 16th century in England. In Canada, the practice pre-dates Confederation, with the first QC appointments made in Upper Canada in 1841.  All three members received their letters patent at a ceremony before the Court of Appeal in Calgary on Tuesday, February 18, 2014.
