Toronto (February 5, 2014) — Subrata Bhattacharjee has joined Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), a pre-eminent, 750-lawyer full-service firm, as a partner and national vice chair of BLG’s Competition and Foreign Investment Review Group.  Subrata brings tremendous experience in competition and foreign investment matters to complement BLG’s extensive anti-trust/competition law practice.  He has consistently been recognized as one of Canada’s leading competition/foreign investment lawyers in Chambers Global, International Who’s Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists, Lexpert and other major peer surveys.

"We are delighted to have Subrata join our growing competition law practice," said Sean Weir, national managing partner and CEO of BLG. "His unique background and international experience is an asset to our current client base and will prove to be a strong addition to our group as they continue to build the practice on a national and international basis.”

Subrata practises exclusively in the area of anti-trust, foreign investment and regulatory litigation.  He routinely provides advice on major international and domestic cartel investigations, merger clearance and other matters under the Competition Act, including class actions relating to the same.  He also carries on an extensive foreign investment practice and advises non-Canadian investors on Canadian foreign investment issues.  He has appeared as counsel in all levels of courts in the Province of Ontario, the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada.

"I am very pleased that Subrata has joined our anti-trust and competition practice at BLG.  As one of Canada’s largest practices in cartel litigation issues, we have been following his exciting career for some time now and believe his experience will be a tremendous asset to our clients,”  said Robert S. Russell, partner and national leader of BLG’s Competition and Foreign Investment Review Group.  "Subrata brings expertise from both the corporate commercial and litigation side of the practice.  In addition to his substantial experience with mergers, and his knowledge and focus with international markets such as Asia, I believe he is a perfect complement to our strong and growing team.”

BLG’s Competition and Foreign Investment Review Group provides advice on all aspects of the Competition Act and Investment Canada Act; from obtaining approval of major transactions to navigating complex criminal investigations and everything in between. With over a dozen lawyers located in BLG’s offices across the country, the Group provides seamless service to major domestic and international clients.

“I was drawn to this opportunity at BLG given the firm’s significant multiple partner competition and anti-trust practice has acted on several notable recent matters, including advising Loblaw on its $12 billion acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart,” said Subrata.  “The BLG team provides precisely the platform that my practice needs at a time when there are significant opportunities in this area of law not just in Canada, but in other leading markets throughout the world."

Prior to joining BLG, Subrata was a partner with the Toronto office of another major Canadian firm where he was head of the firm’s competition and foreign investment practice.  Subrata publishes and speaks frequently on competition/anti-trust issues, foreign investment regulation and related topics.  He is a graduate of Dalhousie University where he obtained his LL.B. in 1993, B.A. in 1990 and B.Sc. in 1989.  Subrata was called to the Ontario bar in 1995.
