Toronto (January 20, 2014) — Laura Paglia has joined Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), a pre-eminent, 750-lawyer full-service firm, as a Partner in the Corporate Commercial Litigation and Arbitration Group.  Laura brings tremendous experience in securities litigation and regulatory matters to complement BLG’s extensive securities litigation and regulatory practice.

"Securities litigation and regulatory matters form a critical area of law in our ever-changing and demanding financial markets," said Sean Weir, national managing partner and CEO of BLG. "Laura is a great addition to our Securities Litigation and Regulatory Group, which has a reputation as one of the strongest, largest and most experienced teams in Canada."

The BLG Securities Litigation and Regulatory Group has deep experience representing public and private companies, full service and discount investment dealers, mutual fund dealers, futures dealers, investment funds, underwriters, private funds, investment banks, introducing and clearing firms, investment advisors, portfolio managers, compliance professionals, research analysts, directors and officers, industry associations, regulators and other market participants.  The Group mixes local knowledge with national reach and is seasoned in dealing with multi-jurisdictional securities-related proceedings before courts and securities regulators across Canada.  Laura joins David Di Paolo as the Regional Co-Leader for the Securities Litigation Group of the Toronto office.

"Laura contributes to our team’s in-depth expertise in the Canadian securities market.  She has been a leader in Canadian securities litigation and regulatory matters and has been involved in representing numerous market participants including investment dealers, mutual fund and futures dealers," said Jim Douglas, national leader of BLG’s Securities Litigation and Regulatory Group. "She is a tremendous asset to our clients as they respond to the many reforms taking place in the regulation of the Canadian financial market."

Prior to joining BLG, Laura was a partner with the Toronto office of another major Canadian law firm.  She provides trusted advice to a wide range of clients on compliance and regulatory issues. Laura is a frequent speaker on and significant contributor to topical and emerging securities issues.

In her 17 years of practice, Laura has acted in a variety of securities related matters including defending and advising on trade desk issues and allegations of deceptive and manipulative trading, insider trading, and material non-disclosure.  She has also appeared before provincial securities commissions, the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada, the Mutual Funds Dealers’ Association and other regulatory tribunals.

”I look forward to continuing my practice as part of BLG’s extensive, dedicated and impressive team and the excellent platform it provides to our clients,” said Laura.
