Calgary (September 19, 2013) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) congratulates David Percy, QC, who today received the University Cup, the highest honour bestowed by the University of Alberta. In 2010, Percy became the BLG Chair of Energy Law and Policy at the University, a position created and funded by BLG and the first of its kind in Canada.

The University Cup recognizes members of its academic staff who have achieved outstanding distinction in each of the areas of scholarly research, teaching and service to the community at large.

“David’s deep understanding of energy law and policy, along with his commitment to strengthening research in this area, make him a deserving recipient of the University Cup,” said David Whelan, managing partner of the Calgary office at BLG. “On behalf of BLG, we congratulate David and look forward to his continued success.”

In 2007, BLG created the Chair of Energy Law and Policy position through a donation of $1.5 million over a 10-year period to enable the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law to strengthen its expertise in energy law and policy. BLG took part in the initiative to sustain its commitment to the oil and gas sector by supporting thought leadership, academic excellence, and policy development.

Prior to becoming the chair, Percy was dean of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law from 2002 to 2009. He is highly regarded in the energy sector, having worked as an advisor on natural resources law to the Government of Canada. Percy graduated with an LLB (Honours) and an MA from Oxford University, earned his LLM from the University of Virginia, and was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1979. He has been a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Wolfson College, Oxford University, and a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University and the University of Virginia.
