Dennis O’Connor, QC, counsel at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, received the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by the Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC) on June 21, 2013.

Since his call to the Bar in 1966, Dennis has led a diverse career. After becoming a renowned criminal defence lawyer, Dennis served in a variety of positions including Magistrate of Yukon (1973-76) and associate law professor at the University of Western Ontario (1976-80). He sat on the Court of Appeal for Ontario (1998-2001), and served as Associate Chief Justice of Ontario (2001-12). He was also deputy judge of the Yukon Supreme Court and led the Walkerton Inquiry (2000-02) and the Maher Arar Inquiry (2004-06).

This honourary degree recognizes outstanding achievement by distinguished members of the legal profession and the public, and is handed out during the LSUC’s call to the bar ceremonies.
