The Honourable Dennis O’Connor Strengthens Firm’s Litigation Practice

Toronto (February 13, 2013) — Following over fourteen years on the bench, the Honourable Dennis O’Connor returns to Borden Ladner Gervais LLP as counsel to the Firm. Highly recognized for his role leading the Walkerton and Arar Inquiries, Dennis brings to the Firm and its clients enormous experience and knowledge of a wide range of legal matters.

“Dennis has an illustrious career and reputation and it is an honour to have him return to BLG,” said Sean Weir, BLG’s national managing partner. “He brings extraordinary experience to a team that is already exceptionally strong, which will serve BLG’s clients well.”

Dennis was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario in 1998. He served as the Associate Chief Justice of Ontario from 2001 to 2012. He conducted two public inquiries – the Arar Inquiry (2004-06) and the Walkerton Inquiry (2000-02). He has received numerous awards and honourary degrees for his work as a judge and on the two inquiries.

Dennis attended Osgoode Hall Law School (LLB, 1964) and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1966. In 1980, he was appointed Queen’s Counsel and from 1980 to 1998, he practised a broad range of litigation with the firm of Borden Elliot in Toronto. Dennis taught law at Western University and Osgoode Hall Law School. He has been a Fellow with the American College of Trial Lawyers since 1991.

Dennis also has considerable experience in Canada’s North. He served as a Magistrate in the Yukon Territory, acted as chief negotiator for the Government of Canada in the Yukon Indian Land Claim and served as a Deputy Supreme Court Judge in the Yukon Territory.

“I’m looking forward to rejoining the Firm and building on what is already an excellent practice,” Dennis said. “I’ve been fortunate in my career to have had experiences that can benefit BLG professionals and their clients as they deal with important legal and business issues.”
