Douglas C. Jack joins Firm as Counsel

WATERLOO (January 01, 2012) – Douglas Jack has joined Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), Canada's largest law firm, as counsel. Born and raised in Fergus, Ont., he will practice primarily out of BLG's Waterloo Region office, where he will continue to provide dedicated legal service to the Canadian veterinary industry.

"Veterinary law is a very unique practice that spans a broad range of practice areas,” said Neil Henderson, office managing partner of BLG's Waterloo Region office. "Doug's extensive experience in veterinary law will fit well with BLG’s national platform and broad scope of services and we plan to assist Doug in providing the best possible service to this specialized practice area all across the country."

Douglas has been practising in the field of veterinary law for over 25 years. During that time, he has worked with veterinary clients on acquisitions, mergers and divestitures, employment law matters, and veterinary practice governance and management issues. In addition, Douglas provides defence counsel to veterinarians before their provincial regulatory authorities in matters of complaints and discipline.

"Joining BLG was a logical next step for my practice, as it will allow me to provide my clients with the support of a national full-service law firm," said Douglas. "I will continue to provide clients with the same level of service they have come to expect from me, but with the added benefit of a team of professionals and staff known for professional and service excellence."

Douglas is a frequent speaker at veterinary conferences around the world, and has written numerous books and articles in Canada. He is a regular columnist for Canadian Vet. Douglas is also a charter and founding member of the American Veterinary Medical Law Association (the only Canadian to have served as its president), and is a management member of the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association. He is a member of the Veterinary Hospital Managers' Association and the American Animal Hospital Association. Currently, he is the public regent on the Board of Regents for the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.

Douglas was called to the Ontario Bar in 1985, after obtaining his LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1980. He previously graduated from St. Jerome's University with a BA in English in 1977.
