September 29, 2010 – The 2010 Lexpert Zenith Awards has awarded Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) with three gold awards for the Firm's contributions to pro bono projects across Canada. BLG Co-chair and Counsel David Scott was also bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement in Pro Bono Award, honouring David's long-standing involvement and leadership in the pro bono legal community.

“David's passion and dedication to providing pro bono legal services has made him a great role model to our lawyers,” said Sean Weir, BLG's national managing partner. “The firm is proud of our work across the country to improve access to justice and we look forward to maintaining a culture in which our professionals are encouraged to engage in pro bono work.”

For nearly 50 years, David has provided his pro bono legal services to many not-for-profit organizations and individuals in a variety of criminal and civil cases. He is the immediate past Chair of Pro Bono Law Ontario and helped BLG establish its official pro bono policy in 2004.

In addition to David's award, BLG's Calgary pro bono team won Gold in the category of Most Impact on Child or Children for their work with the Children's Legal Education Resource Centre in the development of the Child Advocacy Pro Bono Project. Through this initiative, BLG's lawyers provide children and youth with a broad range of legal services in the realm of civil law, including education and school-related issues, estate, employment, immigration issues and property matters.

David Sherriff-Scott, a partner in BLG's Ottawa office, received Gold in the category of Change Agent: Disability for his ongoing pro bono work to benefit children with disabilities and their families. David regularly acts in an advisory role, and as litigation counsel for children with various exceptionalities such as autism, intellectual disabilities and behavioural disorders, and successfully challenged a proposed budget-cut by a local school board that would have eliminated $5 million of funding for special needs programs.

And BLG's Montréal pro bono team was awarded Gold in the category of Multi-Disciplinary for their work with the Dr. Julien Foundation. Through their involvement with Dr. Julien's social pediatric centres, BLG's lawyers provide pro bono legal services to children with difficulties and their families to help resolve conflicts such as the right to health care services, education, adapted transportation, clean and safe housing and a healthy environment, among other issues.

The Lexpert Zenith Awards honour the leading Canadian law firms, in-house departments and law students who are committing their time, skills and mentorship to a diverse and valuable range of pro bono activities.

The awards were handed out on Sept. 28, 2010 at an awards banquet held at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
