Head of BLG's Competition Law practice receives prestigious award for delivering outstanding client service and results

Toronto (February 1, 2010) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), Canada's largest law firm, received international recognition as a client service leader by U.S.-based corporate counsel. Robert Russell, the Head of BLG's Competition Law practice, was named by U.S. Consultancy BTI as part of their prestigious Client Service All-Stars 2010 award as one the best providers of legal services. Every year the survey names an elite group of lawyers independently nominated by clients as delivering the absolute best in client service.

“[Robert Russell] epitomizes everything that makes Borden Ladner so valuable: the proactive approach, client-savvy and emotional intelligence,” notes the General Counsel at a Global 500 high-tech company when ranking Mr. Russell.

BTI conducts more than 250 individual interviews annually with corporate counsel at the largest companies in the world. The survey gauges market opportunities, probes changing client needs and assesses client experiences with their law firms and lawyers. BTI ranked 165 individual lawyers hailing from 112 mostly U.S.-based law firms. Robert Russell belongs to a select group of 22 lawyers worldwide recognized by U.S.-based clients year after year.

“It is a huge honour for BLG to be part of such an exclusive pool of lawyers around the globe to be recognized as delivering best in class legal services”, said Sean Weir, BLG's National Managing Partner. “I want to congratulate Rob on this outstanding recognition.”

Corporate counsel gave a range of reasons for singling out lawyers who provide excellent service. More than anything else, knowing as much as possible about their client's business itself, not just the legal aspects of a case, is critical to providing excellent service. “Many lawyers could do more to make sure they understand the ins and outs of a client's business”, said Robert Russell, who is based in Toronto and represents companies around the world in the airline, technology and grocery industries. To that end, Russell provides half-day sessions on compliance with antitrust regulations once a year at no charge to his clients.

“It gives the client added value and allows me to learn and understand their business better without leaving corporate counsel with the feeling that the meter is always running,” he said.

This was Russell's second consecutive year to be named in the report.
