Donald G. Pierce Q.C. joins Borden Ladner Gervais LLP
A pioneer in public-private partnership projects with more than 30 years experience in construction, public-private partnerships and infrastructure projects

Toronto (August 6, 2009) – Donald G. Pierce Q.C., a prominent figure and pioneer in the public-private partnership field, has joined the Toronto office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) as counsel to the Construction, Engineering, Surety and Fidelity Group.

Mr. Pierce practiced over 30 years at Goodmans LLP in the areas of commercial real estate, land development, construction, project finance, public-private partnerships and infrastructure until 2006 when he joined GreenField Ethanol Inc. as an Executive Vice President and President of GreenField Advanced Biofuels Ltd.

'Don’s unrivalled expertise and experience adds invaluable client and industry insight, further strengthening BLG’s position as the national leader in the area of construction, engineering, public-private partnerships and infrastructure,' said Sean Weir, National Managing Partner of BLG. 'Don’s strength resides in his sound knowledge of all facets of the industry, which gives him an unparalleled understanding of the issues, challenges and opportunities our clients face.'

Mr. Pierce was a pioneer in Canadian public-private partnership projects, acting mostly for governments but also for private proponent teams. In his last fifteen years prior to joining GreenField, Mr. Pierce developed a reputation as a leading practitioner in large public-private partnership projects such as the Fredericton to Moncton Toll Highway project in New Brunswick. He was also retained by the Province of Ontario to act on their behalf in connection with the $1 billion toll road Highway 407 which is the first all electronic toll road in the world. Other highlights in Mr. Pierce’s career include, leading the design and build transaction for the Province of Ontario on the QEW widening project and advising the Government of Turkey in connection with the U.S. $2 billion Izmit Bay Crossing project.

While at GreenField, Mr. Pierce was in charge of the fuel growth plan for Canada’s largest ethanol producer. In that role, Mr. Pierce led the company’s initiatives to construct Canada’s largest grain based ethanol plant and also led the re-financing of the company.

'I am proud to join BLG and have the opportunity to work with a team that is undoubtedly a leader in the construction and infrastructure practice areas across the country,' said Donald Pierce. 'I believe my depth of business and industry experience and insight will really complement the incredible bench strength the group already possesses. I’m eager to continue serving great clients and provide a valuable contribution to the firm.'

Mr. Pierce obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from Carleton University in 1963 and his J.D. from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law in 1966.
