Neil McCrank will counsel on oil sands, large energy deals

CALGARY (June 3, 2008) - Neil McCrank, Q.C., former chair of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board, has joined the Calgary office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP as counsel, bringing a wealth of insight into the province’s regulatory regime as it relates to large oil sands and electricity projects.

'This is a major win for our clients,' said Randall Block, Q.C., partner in BLG’s Calgary office. 'The process to get large energy projects approved in Alberta has become increasingly complex and demanding.'

In addition to being a lawyer, Mr. McCrank is also an engineer and member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta.

'I came to BLG because it has a top-tier energy practice and I’m excited by the opportunity to provide strategic advice on some of the most important, large energy projects this province is facing,' said Mr. McCrank. 'Whether it’s northern development and the oil sands, or major electricity generation and transmission projects, or continuing my involvement in consultations with the First Nations, I’m looking forward to helping the companies that want to invest responsibly in Alberta.'

Mr. McCrank chaired the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board from 1998 until his retirement in March, 2007. Before his time on the board, he was deputy justice minister in the Alberta government. Soon after leaving the EUB, he was appointed Chairman of a Task Force to review Alberta’s Agencies, Boards and Commissions. He was also appointed, in November 2007, as a member of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Advisory Council on National Security.

In 2007, he accepted an appointment by the Federal Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development as the Minister's Special Representative to review potential improvements to the Northern regulatory system.

Mr. McCrank currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Canadian Association for the World Petroleum Congress, Chairman of the Canadian Energy Research Institute, and is a member of the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy Leadership Board at the University of Calgary. In December 2007, he became a member of the Board of Directors of AltaGas Income Trust. He is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, and the Law Society of Upper Canada.
