BLG Partner Named George Brown College Chancellor

Noella Milne will celebrate student success as the second Chancellor in the college's history

Toronto (May 3, 2019)  — Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce that Noella Milne has been named as George Brown College’s newest Chancellor.

Noella has been actively involved within the George Brown College’s community for the past 15 years, serving consecutive terms on its Board of Governors from 2003-2009 and its Foundation Board from 2010-2018, including a term as the Foundation Board’s Chair. Noella is only the second Chancellor in the college’s history — in 2012, George Brown became the first college in Ontario to have such a role.

As Chancellor, Noella will help to celebrate student success and act as a representative of the College within the community. Noella serves as an excellent example for the students of George Brown. She arrived in Canada alone at 17 from Mumbai before working to put herself through college, then university and law school to become one of the firm’s senior partners. She is widely recognized within the legal and business community for both her excellence within the profession as well as her community involvement and charitable work.

She has been appointed to the Order of Ontario, received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, the YWCA Women of Distinction Award, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Children’s Aid Foundation, was a recipient of the RBC Top 25 Immigrant Award, the Arbor Award from the University of Toronto, and was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by WXN, among many other distinctions. At George Brown College, Noella has led a number of donations including a scholarship in the name of her late sister, Lorna D'Souza, aimed at single mothers attending George Brown College.

As a volunteer, Noella is a member of the Advisory Board of the Children's Aid Foundation, former President and Honorary Life Director of the Canadian Club, Immediate Past Chair of UNICEF Canada and a past member of the Order of Ontario Advisory Council, the Board of Directors for St. Michael's Hospital, the Children's Aid Society of Toronto and the Ontario Science Centre, among others. She also continues to mentor young lawyers and women through WXN and the Children's Aid Society.
