The Ottawa office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, one of Canada’s largest law firms, is seeking an experienced Trademark Law Clerk to provide support to leading Trademark Agents and contribute to the overall excellent level of service provided to our clients by the Intellectual Property Group.

The Law Clerk will be an important member of the legal team working with the Trademark lawyers and legal support staff to provide the highest level of client service while having the opportunity to develop their skills as part of a dynamic and successful national team. The ideal candidate must be a team player, have a strong work ethic, a mind-set of continuous improvement, and be a self-starter in a fast paced environment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the desire and ability to identify problems and gaps, develop and design creative solutions and will have experience working in a Trademark environment as a Law Clerk at an intermediate to senior level.

The key responsibilities of these roles include, but are not limited to:

  • Reporting Office Actions
  • Preparing Responses to Office Actions
  • Reviewing Declarations of Use with amended/deleted goods and/or services and preparing revised applications to file along with registration fees
  • Drafting correspondence for oppositions, summary cancellation proceedings, and disputes
  • Managing due dates and following up with clients when needed 
  • Processing invoices, preparing and sending invoices to clients

The key competencies required are:

  • Law Clerk Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the area of IP, specifically Trademarks
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office (specifically, MS Word and Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Flexibility, good judgment and initiative, ability to prioritize
  • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail and problem solve
  • Available to work overtime, when necessary
