Purpose of Role

The Senior Specialist, Communications will develop, implement and evaluate communications strategies that support the Firm’s business objectives.

Working closely with members of the Marketing & Communications and Business Development teams, this role leads the Firm’s Ranking and Awards program and is focused on executing results-oriented media relations that generates positive coverage of the Firm. The Sr. Specialist is responsible for championing strategic communications to internal and external audiences and contributing to the advancement of the Firm’s brand in the legal and business marketplace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages the firm’s participation in legal rankings publications and legal awards programs, including planning and overseeing the annual cycle, supporting the legal rankings submission process, drafting legal awards nominations, and facilitating interviews with researchers and editors. Manages the firm’s profile and lawyers’ bios in various directories and ranking publications.
  • Leads performance analysis, tracks ranking results and development and maintenance of a database. Leads the communication of legal rankings results and awards to external and internal audiences.
  • Assesses requirements and perceived business value (ROI) of awards and ranking publications, and provides strategic recommendation for participation. Manages related budgets.
  • Supports day-to-day external communications operations, media relations (liaising with the firm’s agency of record and internal colleagues), and project management of thought leadership and marketing publications. Delivers research, writing, copyediting and other communications support as directed by the Senior Manager.
  • Evaluates and supports participation in broader legal industry, business, community and other third-party awards and recognitions programs, coordinating with key stakeholders that contribute to raising the firm’s profile in the marketplace. 
  • Supports special projects as designated by the Senior Manager or National Director.

Key Competencies Required

  • A Bachelor degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a relevant field.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years relevant experience in communications or marketing. Experience in a legal environment, professional services or B2B firm an asset.
  • Undergraduate degree required (Marketing, Communications, Business, Journalism focus preferred).
  • ABC, PMP or other professional designation an asset. MBA an asset.
  • Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills. Knowledge of CP style an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop / lead and support all aspects of a program, or portfolio of internal services (e.g. direct experience with a recognition program, or other broad-based communication and marketing program).
  • Superior oral communications skills. Bilingualism (French) an asset.
  • Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment and a large matrix organization.
  • Ability to build and maintain trusted relationships with senior internal stakeholders, clients, vendors and editors.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong team player with excellent judgment, resourcefulness, flexibility and creativity.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and demonstrated project management skills.  
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and take initiative.
  • High proficiency skills in Microsoft Office products.
