The Ottawa office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, one of Canada’s largest law firms, is seeking an experienced Patent Law Clerk to provide support to leading Patent Agents and contribute to the overall excellent level of service provided to our clients by the Intellectual Property Group.

The Law Clerk will be an important member of the legal team working with the Patent Lawyers, Agents and legal support staff to provide the highest level of client service while having the opportunity to develop their skills as part of a dynamic and successful national team. The Law Clerk supports team members with workflow, maintains client standards, assists with training, shares knowledge and provides back-up during team absences.

The ideal candidate must be a team player, have a strong work ethic, a mind-set of continuous improvement, and be a self-starter in a fast paced environment. The selected candidate will demonstrate the desire and ability to identify problems and gaps, develop and design creative solutions and will have experience working in a Patent environment as a Law Clerk at an intermediate to senior level.

The key responsibilities of these roles include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparation, organization and collection of documents relating to U.S., Foreign and PCT patent client files/matters
  • Monitoring due list of all U.S., Foreign and PCT patent deadline and sending appropriate reminders
  • Reviewing, docketing and reporting official correspondence from foreign patent offices and foreign associates
  • Opening, preparing filing and reporting of U.S. direct and PCT International patent applications
  • Interacting with USPTO and other foreign patent offices (e.g. WIPO) with respect to administrative matters and corresponding with foreign associates to facilitate ongoing prosecution of patent applications

The key competencies required are:

  • Law Clerk Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with advanced knowledge in U.S. and foreign filing and prosecution
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office (specifically, MS Word and Excel and PowerPoint) as well as Adobe
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Flexibility, good judgment and initiative, ability to prioritize
  • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail; demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness
