Purpose of Role

The Calgary office of BLG is seeking a Paralegal Coordinator, Corporate Services to join its Corporate Services team. The Coordinator will be an important member of the Corporate Services team and will work with other team members, lawyers and legal support staff to provide the highest level of client service while having the opportunity to develop their skills as part of a dynamic and successful national team. The ideal candidate must be a team player, have a strong work ethic, a mind-set of continuous improvement, and be a self-starter in a fast paced environment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the desire and ability to identify problems and gaps, develop and design creative solutions and will have experience working in a corporate commercial legal environment.

The Coordinator will primarily work independently but with the appropriate level of supervision of a lawyer or the Senior Coordinator, Paraprofessional Services – Corporate Services when performing key responsibilities of the role such as the following:

In addition to performing billable paralegal responsibilities, the key non-billable responsibilities of this role are:

  • Act as primary contact for the dissemination of information and decision-making in the paralegal team;
  • Act as a resource to the paralegal team by providing guidance and leadership on addressing/resolving issues; that arise in day-to-day workflow activities;
  • Negotiate the delegation of work with team members, assesses the impact on individual workloads;
  • Coordinate projects related to paralegal processes with an emphasis on streamlining and improving processes;
  • Review and recommend changes and development of procedures, checklists and other related tools;
  • Liaise with the Senior Coordinator, Paraprofessional Services – Corporate Services and the other regional Corporate Services Paralegal/Law Clerk Coordinators regarding paralegal projects and process changes to ensure best practices are followed nationally;
  • Organize the backup system for paralegal team; coverages due to illness or vacation; act as contact for any urgent requirements;
  • Coordinate team meetings;
  • Participate in and coordinate the performance management process;
  • Identify staffing requirements for the paralegal team; assist in recruiting and interviews of candidates for staffing;
  • Participate in the orientation and training of new team members;
  • Participate in the creation and delivery of training seminars;
  • Monitor paralegal team billable hours target and support paralegals in billing issues.

The billable responsibilities of this role may include:

  • Drafting documents including share conditions, acquisition and merger transactions and corporate and tax reorganization and restructuring transactions;
  • Reviewing and considering calculations and other issues relating to documentation of various types of dividends;
  • Registering and maintaining extra-provincial registrations, partnerships, limited partnerships and business names;
  • Coordinating with Corporate Registries and agencies regarding filing and other issues;
  • Liaising with clients, accountants and Canada Revenue Agency officials on examination and review of corporate records;
  • Conducting corporate due diligence and report;
  • Understanding and analyzing corporate charter documents and records to ensure compliance with governing statute;
  • Researching and interpreting applicable legal and technical procedures, statutes, and regulations.

Key Competencies Required

The basic skill set to be achieved for this position is as follows:

  • Paralegal Diploma or equivalent
  • Have a minimum of 8 of experience as a Corporate Commercial Paralegal
  • CORES Level III accreditation
  • Familiarity with ALF or other corporate governance programs is an asset
  • Supervisory and soft skills training an asset
  • Professional demeanor and strong organizational and problem solving skills
  • A team player attitude with exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work independently and to show common sense when following instructions or taking the initiative
  • A strong work ethic and commitment to excellence
  • Ability to process documentation with good attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with Windows-based computer systems including Microsoft Word, Excel, outlook and Adobe.
  • Strong desire and willingness to develop skills and acquire knowledge
