Purpose of Role

The Law Clerk’s primary purpose is to provide support to the EMER Group, in particular the expropriation practice, and contribute to the overall excellent level of service provided to our clients.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Title and rent roll researching to identify stakeholders in the expropriation process
  • Review surveys, draft reference plans, draft expropriation plans and various forms of legal descriptions
  • Draft municipal by-laws relating to the expropriation process
  • Prepare all expropriation notices, declarations and offers of compensation
  • Prepare for and coordinate hearings of necessity
  • Electronic organization and maintenance of files
  • Preparing client reports at regular intervals and engaging in direct client communications relating to ongoing matters
  • Follow procedures under the Rules of Civil Procedure, Planning Act, Expropriations Act and Ontario Municipal Board
  • Liaising with and retaining expert witnesses
  • Maintaining a bring-forward system to: ensure team members have everything required for any scheduled meetings, discoveries, mediations, hearings or court appearances

Key Competencies Required

  • Law Clerk Diploma or Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario Certificate (or equivalent)
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a similar role with focus on title issues, real estate closings, and ideally expropriation processes
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel 2010
  • Professional demeanor and strong organizational, investigative, fact-finding, and problem solving skills
  • A team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with clients, lawyers and colleagues
  • Ability to work independently and with excellent judgment to both follow instructions with minimal supervision and take initiative as required
  • Flexibility, good judgment and initiative with a demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Ability to handle pressure and to remain calm in working within time constraints
  • Availability to work extended hours when necessary
