BLG’s Ottawa Office is looking for a motivated and resourceful Law Clerk to join its Commercial Litigation Group.

The Commercial Litigation Law Clerk will be an integral member of the Commercial Litigation Group working closely with lawyers and other members of team to provide the highest level of client service, while having the opportunity to develop their skills as part of a dynamic and successful national team.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the desire and ability to identify problems and gaps, develop and design creative solutions and will have experience working in a Commercial Litigation environment as a Law Clerk at an intermediate to senior level.

The key responsibilities of these roles include, but are not limited to:

  • File management from inception to conclusion
  • Drafting originating applications, Statements of Defence and other pleadings, interlocutory proceedings and motion materials
  • Identifying, requesting and monitoring lists of required productions and information from both the client and opposing counsel
  • Preparing electronic document briefs, charts, chronologies and summaries of documentary evidence for use on discovery, mediation, pre-trial and arbitration/trial
  • Analysis of client documents and preliminary drafting of the Affidavit of Documents, including identification of Schedule “A”, “B”, “C” & “D” (where applicable) productions
  • Reviewing and summarizing transcripts of examinations; managing undertakings and refusals
  • Compiling books of authorities and other briefs
  • Preparing mediation and pre‑trial briefs
  • Preparing documentation required for appeals including books of authorities, compendium materials, and assisting with preparation of facta
  • Arranging and participating in meetings with experts
  • Compiling statistics and information, and performing research tasks
  • Hearing and trial preparation
  • Maintaining a bring-forward system to: ensure team members have everything required for scheduled meetings, discoveries, mediations, arbitration hearings or Court appearances; and,
  • Cooperating within the team to assist with overflow, urgent deadlines and back-up coverage.

The key competencies required are:

  • Minimum 5+ years commercial litigation law clerk experience
  • Knowledge of Rules of Civil Procedure, Federal Court Rules and statutes
  • Knowledge of Supreme Court of Canada agency work an asset
  • Community College Law Clerk Diploma or Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario Certificate (or equivalent)
  • Eligible for membership as an Associate Member of the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Knowledge of Relativity software an asset
  • Professional demeanor and strong organizational, investigative, fact‑finding, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to process a high volume of documentation with excellent attention to detail
  • A team player attitude with excellent communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with clients, lawyers, investigators, experts, and staff.
