Executive Summary

Rick Shaban is a Senior Partner in BLG's Construction Group based in Toronto. He is one of Canada's leading infrastructure, surety and construction lawyers, and is recognized by highly esteemed agencies such as Chambers Global, The Lexpert/American LawyersGuide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada and both the International and Canadian editions of Who's Who Legal: Construction. In 2019, was recently recognized as one of the top lawyers globally by Acritas.

Rick has over 30 years’ experience bringing practical legal and industry-specific expertise to each client. He is uniquely positioned with extensive experience in transactional work and dispute resolution. He is actively involved in a large number of infrastructure projects – successfully leading transaction teams and closing a number of P3 deals as well as crafting complex project agreements using most project delivery methods. Rick has extensive experience in domestic and international dispute resolution having resolved countless project disputes including appearances at every level of court including the Supreme Court of Canada. ​​​

Rick is the Past President and a founding Fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers and is also the Program Director for the Osgoode Law School P3 Certificate program.

Representative Work

  • Represents hospitals, public authorities, owners, developers, general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and surety bond companies with respect to issues relating to all aspects of construction projects, including the negotiation of construction contracts, tendering construction disputes, and insurance and surety-related matters.
