Executive Summary

Frédéric Massé is a partner in our Labour and Employment Group in our Montréal office.

Frédéric has developed a specialized expertise in collective labour relations and administrative law matters, particularly judicial reviews. He has been called upon to make several representations before numerous administrative tribunals (Tribunal administratif du travail, Tribunal administratif du Québec, Access to Information Commission), as well as before the Québec Superior Court, the Court of Appeal of Québec and the Supreme Court of Canada.

In addition, Frédéric has extensive experience with respect to collective labour relations between producers and artists and in collective bargaining negotiations, having served as both lead negotiator and external counsel in connection with numerous collective bargaining negotiations in a variety of industries, from film and television production, to the private education and industrial manufacturing sectors, at both the provincial and federal levels.

Frédéric also possesses in-depth experience in specialty practice areas, including pay equity, pension plan management and educational law, to name a few. He frequently assists clients with the development and implementation of complex strategies involving a number of different law sectors and those having significant multidisciplinary facets.

Representative Work

  • Spokesman for the Association québécoise de la production médiatique (Québec Television and Film Producers Association) in various province-wide and nationwide collective bargaining negotiations.
  • Spokesman for various businesses in the manufacturing and education sectors involved in negotiating renewals of their collective labour agreements.
  • Lead counsel in a constitutional law contestation dealing with the freedom of expression of an employer concerning staff-members.
  • Lead counsel in various disputes before arbitral tribunals, the Tribunal administratif du Québec and/or the Superior Court dealing with an employer's right to amend and/or terminate a pension plan.
  • Counsel to retirement committees and/or pension fund trustees, particularly in the context of pension plan terminations.
  • Has made representations before arbitral tribunals and/or the Tribunal administratif du travail relating to various companies and public institutions, particularly in the hospital and university sectors.
  • Has made representations before arbitral tribunals and/or the Tribunal administratif du travail involving film or television producers, particularly in their relationships with their performing artists.
  • Has acted for public institutions and individuals embroiled in disagreements with municipal, provincial and/or federal governments, particularly on matters of public law, official languages and municipal by-laws.
  • Has served as legal draftsman and pleader in many disputes connected with union organizing campaigns, especially in the retail sales, university and medical research and technological services industries.
