Executive Summary

Vanessa Lapointe is an associate and certified mediator with BLG's Labour and Employment Law Group in Montréal. She represents the interests of companies of all sizes, unionized and non-unionized, in matters ranging from prevention to representation. In particular, she advises employers regarding hiring and dismissals, disciplinary measures, workplace investigations, labour relations and human rights.

Vanessa was previously assigned to the legal department of a large technology and distribution company in the automobile industry and was also seconded on two occasions to a leading Canadian developer and operator of touristic infrastructure. She carried out these assignments under the supervision of an international law firm, where she then completed her articles.

Vanessa holds an LL.B. degree and a Certificate in Criminology from the Université de Montréal, and has also studied Sociology and Hispanic Studies at McGill University. During her legal studies, she held the position of Vice-President of Administrative Affairs at the Université de Montréal, and also represented Canada at the Faculty of Law of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Spain.

Vanessa speaks English and French fluently and has a working knowledge of both Italian and Spanish.

Representative Work

  • Defended a company in the context of injunctive procedures before the Superior Court.
  • Defended the confidentiality of a company’s commercial agreements before the Administrative Labour Tribunal.
  • Conducted external investigations of harassment complaints, for employers of federal and provincial jurisdictions.
  • Participated in representing various employers in litigation governed by the Act respecting labour standards and the Labour Code and the Canada Labour Code.
  • Drafted various employment contracts and confidentiality, non-competition and non-solicitation agreements, as well as some collective agreements.
  • Conducted internal workplace harassment training.
  • Assisted the M&A team in the context of various transactions.
  • Advised a large US company on the onboarding of its Quebec employees in the context of the business' expansion in Canada.
  • Prepared and gave lectures advising employers, particularly regarding the prevention of in-house fraud, the enforcement of restrictive covenants in contracts of employment and recent developments in labour and employment law.
