Matthew Kronby  


Executive Summary

Matthew Kronby is recognized for his exceptional understanding of trade and investment agreements, his strategic acumen and his insider’s knowledge of how governments interact with businesses and with each other. 

His practice encompasses trade and investment treaty negotiations and dispute settlement, where he has been involved in many of the highest profile trade files, including the current NAFTA negotiations and the Canada-US softwood lumber dispute, and trade and regulatory compliance where he has represented government and corporate clients from Canada and around the world in trade remedy investigations, and investigations and transactional matters involving economic sanctions, export controls and foreign corrupt practices laws. 

Before entering private practice, Matthew was the Director General of the Government of Canada’s Trade Law Bureau and served in the Bureau for more than 15 years. He was Canada's chief counsel in the negotiation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the European Union and free trade agreements with Colombia, Peru and Singapore. He has led legal teams in numerous WTO disputes and in investment arbitrations under the NAFTA.

Matthew is an Adjunct Professor of International Arbitration at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, Vice-Chair of the International Bar Association's International Trade and Customs Law Committee and Chair of the Legal Committee of Transparency International Canada. He has been appointed to Canada’s roster of NAFTA Chapter 19 panelists and serves on the Minister of the Environment’s NAFTA Advisory Council. 

In 2017, he was recognized by the Ontario Bar Association with its Award of Excellence in International Law.

Matthew began his career as a Foreign Service Officer. He served for three years in the Congressional and Legal Affairs Section of the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC, where he focused on trade and economic sanctions legislation and trans-border resource and environmental issues.
