Executive Summary

Marie-Pier Emery practices, in French and English, in the Labour and Employment Law Group in BLG's Montréal office.

In her practice, Marie-Pier deals with all aspects of labour and employment law, as well as with occupational health and safety matters, acting for large, medium-sized and small businesses, whether or not unionized.

She also advises employers on the hiring and firing of employees, the interpretation and application of collective agreements and individual employment contracts, occupational health and safety matters, and workplace investigations of all kinds, as well as with respect to human rights issues.

She is also called upon to plead before the Administrative Labour Tribunal (on matters of labour relations and occupational health and safety), as well as before grievance arbitrators and the civil courts.

Ms. Emery also advises and helps businesses in their recruitment of foreign workers, namely for all matters relating to the issuance of a work permit.

Ms. Emery holds a law degree (LL.L.) and a Bachelor's of Social Sciences (B. Sc. C.) from the University of Ottawa, where she majored in globalization and international development. Following her undergraduate studies, she spent a year in Paris, where she successfully completed the requirements for a Master's degree in French and comparative law, focusing on labour law.

Marie-Pier was hired as a student and did her articling at BLG, before being called to the Barreau du Québec in 2017. Since then, she has been a member of the firm's Labour and Employment Law Group.

Representative Work

  • Marie-Pier Emery has successfully represented large enterprises before the Administrative Labour Tribunal (Occupational Health and Safety Division).
  • She also successfully participated in defending large businesses in constructive dismissal claims made by former managerial employees accused of oppressing a minority shareholder.
  • She has also drafted several factums in appeal in judicial review application cases relating, inter alia, to issues of labour and employment law, human rights, corporation law and constitutional law.
  • Marie-Pier has also participated in defending the interests of the Bank of Montreal in a case involving a former employee who had been dismissed for harassment, and in which the arbitrator confirmed the employee’s termination.
