Ottawa (May 22, 2014) — Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce it has selected Clear Pod Inc. and Figure of Eight Inc., as the first start-ups to participate in the BLG Growth Catalyst Program. The two companies are Ottawa-based and members of the Invest Ottawa GrindSpace XL accelerator.

“We are thrilled to offer these first stage Canadian companies access to affordable and high quality legal services without diluting the founders’ equity in the company,” said Curtis Behmann, partner, BLG Information Technology Group in Ottawa. “The BLG Growth Catalyst Program team are experienced legal professionals who provide both strategic and tactical advice to companies at a critical phase in their development.”

The BLG Growth Catalyst Program is designed to offset legal fees by providing access to a multi-disciplinary team of tech-savvy lawyers, patent and trademark agents specializing in intellectual property protection, corporate, labour and employment law. For companies who have attracted eligible government funding, BLG’s Growth Catalyst Program will match every dollar that those companies spend on legal services from BLG, up to $10,000 per company. This matching will be provided in the form of additional legal services.

“As a start-up company BLG has been generous in providing us with an opportunity to access legal services crucial in development of our company," said Suzan Bsat, co-founder and Vice President, Figure of Eight Inc.

Figure of Eight Inc. develops medical billing software permitting physicians to submit claims quickly, efficiently and securely. Clear Pod Inc. develops environmentally sustainable solutions for septic system waste water treatment that significantly improves the performance of septic systems. Both companies recently graduated from the winter cohort for Invest Ottawa’s GrindSpace XL Program for high-potential start-ups.  They were two of four GrindSpace companies that received government funding through the SPARC program via IRAP and Invest Ottawa.  Pre-acceptance of the two companies into BLG’s Growth Catalyst Program assisted these companies in successfully obtaining the SPARC funding.

"At Clear Pod we have developed a novel low-cost solution for home-owners with a failing septic system,” said Patrick D. Kiely, PhD, CEO and Founder, Clear Pod Inc. “The Catalyst Program has been instrumental in us securing a path for the intellectual property we have developed in this space."

BLG has a long history of supporting technology start-up companies. In addition to the Growth Catalyst Program, BLG provides training and initial consultations to Invest Ottawa portfolio companies. BLG has been a Champion partner with Invest Ottawa’s accelerator since September 2012 and has invested more than $150,000 to support Ottawa’s thriving entrepreneurial community.

“BLG is a trusted partner of Invest Ottawa and this program is really great for our portfolio companies because it provides them access to the best advice in the business at rates they can afford,” said Bruce Lazenby, CEO, Invest Ottawa. “This is just the start of the program and I only expect it to grow exponentially over the next months.”
