BLG Calgary focuses our community investment initiatives on programs related to children, literacy, health research, and agencies that support families in need.
BLG Calgary has an annual United Way Campaign, supports families through Calgary-area programs over the winter holidays, and run fundraising campaigns throughout the year to raise money for local charities and community events.
We support both Alberta law schools through the BLG Business Venture Clinic at the University of Calgary, and the Energy Law and Policy Chair at the University of Alberta. We also proudly support the annual BLG Awards, BLG Reads to Kids program and the BLG Foundation.
We actively encourage all members of the Firm to get involved and contribute to charitable and community causes, and actively support our membership by providing donations to a number of charities requested by BLG members throughout the year. BLG Professional members of the firm also participate in pro bono initiatives, including working with the Alberta Volunteer Lawyers Service, Children's Legal & Educational Resource Centre, the Civil Claims Duty Counsel Pro Bono Project, Calgary Legal Guidance and Pro Bono Students Canada.
BLG Business Venture Clinic
BLG is proud to support a multi-year partnership with the BLG Business Venture Clinic at the University of Calgary. The BLG Business Venture Clinic is a student-run, pro bono legal clinic at the Faculty of Law that provides free legal information to Calgary’s entrepreneurs.
Through the clinic, law students are paired with local entrepreneurs in need of legal service or advice. To complete the work, students collaborate with BLG lawyers, who provide guidance and feedback to ensure the work provided is complete and accurate.
The goal of the BLG Business Venture Clinic is to enhance the student’s education experience by providing valuable mentorship from BLG lawyers, while allowing them to connect with clients and apply their burgeoning legal knowledge in real-life situations.
National Music Centre
We have recently announced a 10-year partnership with the National Music Centre (NMC) located in Calgary. The NMC is regarded as a catalyst for discovery, innovation and renewal through music. It offers innovative programming aimed at a wide demographic from children to up-and-coming musicians. Activities include youth mentorship, school engagement, and a Masters in Residence program that provides opportunities for emerging artists.
BLG has a long history working with the NMC, members of the firm have supported the project both professionally, and in a volunteer capacity for over 20 years. BLG's sponsorship is crucial in supporting local and national arts and culture initiatives in Calgary, and is consistent with our long-standing focus on children and youth.
Calgary & Area Child Advocacy Centre
BLG is pleased to announce our three year partnership with the Calgary & Area Child Advocacy Centre (CCAC), in support of the Centre’s Child Life Program. Located in Calgary, the Calgary & Area Child Advocacy Centre addresses a critical issue in an innovative way. Through an integrated approach, the Centre provides the vast services and support necessary to make a lasting impact in the lives of children, youth, and families affected by abuse.
The Child Life Program is made up of a Child Life Specialist and a team of Child Space Volunteers, which includes PALS dogs. The program focuses on therapeutic play, self‑expression activities and medical preparation, to ensure every child’s experience at the CCAC is safe and comfortable.
As part of the partnership with CCAC, BLG professionals will volunteer their time to support the Centre’s activities and the firm will continue to provide pro bono legal services. These efforts coincide with the guidance provided by Melinda Park, a Partner in our Calgary office, who currently serves on CCAC’s Board of Directors and as Chair of the Governance Committee.
