Corporate Responsibility

We're driven by our commitment to professional and service excellence. We begin by recruiting exceptional people.

We understand that BLG’s success depends on building a culture that attracts the very best students, support staff, paralegals, legal professionals and clients.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion

Both within and beyond our walls, we aim to provide a respectful and inclusive environment for our people and our clients. We’re a proud partner of many organizations committed to improving diversity and inclusiveness in our communities.

Fostering Women’s Leadership

We’re dedicated to ensuring the success of women: in the workplace, in business and in the community at large. BLG’s Women’s Leadership Development Committee (WLDC):

  • implements and monitors programs to retain and advance our female professionals
  • gathers and analyzes statistics regarding retention and leadership of female employees
  • advises the Firm on the advancement of women
  • offer seminars and events for our female professionals

Supporting Youth Literacy

Launched in September 2003, BLG Reads to Kids is our longest-running and most successful community initiative. This national program supports literacy in schools located in economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Each school year, more than 300 BLG staff and professionals volunteer their time reading to children in kindergarten to grade three.

BLG Reads to Kids has established partnerships with school boards and like-minded organizations including Ottawa Reads and Calgary Reads. We also supplement the program with book donation drives and other activities to assist our school literacy partners.

Making Legal Services Accessible to All

BLG professionals volunteer regularly as pro bono counsel for people for whom legal services would otherwise be inaccessible. Our National Pro Bono Committee oversees the work of regional committees to identify, coordinate and monitor pro bono activities, ensuring the highest quality service.

Our lawyers contributed more than 7,500 hours and the equivalent of $2.5 million in billable pro bono work in 2013. In fact, BLG was named “Pro Bono Firm of the Year” at the 2013 Benchmark Canada Awards.
