Executive Summary

Robin Squires is a Partner in the Insurance and Tort Liability Group and the Toronto Leader of the Maritime Law Group. Robin practices general litigation with specialties in aviation, maritime and transportation law. Robin defends professionals in negligence actions and advocates on behalf of corporate clients, insurance companies and municipalities. Robin's practice includes personal injury, third party motor vehicle, occupiers' liability, tavern/host liability and product liability claims.

Robin represents ship owners and P&I Clubs in actions involving domestic and international shipping, including cargo claim defence, collisions and casualty work and arrest of vessels. He also represents aviation insurers in collision and casualty claims. As well, Robin defends lawyers, police officers and other professionals in order to protect their professional reputations. He regularly advocates for his clients at all levels of Ontario Courts, in the Federal Court, at tribunals and at mediations. He is a member of the Firm's Team North® initiative.

Robin's insurance defence experience includes several complex casualty matters involving multiple parties and inter-jurisdictional and cross-border insurance issues.

Robin's first career was as a Summer Camp and Outdoor Centre Director in Kingston, Ontario.

BLG’s Annual Maritime Law Seminar was held on December 1, 2017 in Montréal. Topics covered include 'Cybersecurity in the Maritime Industry', 'Autonomous Vessels' and the 'Effect of Canada/EU Free Trade Agreement on the Cabotage Trade'.

Representative Work

Robin represents ship owners, aircraft owners and pilots, police officers, lawyers, municipalities, corporations and commercial hosts, among others.

Robin defends actions involving specific legislation such as the Marine Liability Act, Highway Traffic Act, Insurance Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997 and the Liquor Licence Act.

Robin advises clients on liability and risk management issues, including drafting of service agreements, contracts, liability releases, indemnity agreements, and general corporate matters including governance issues and labour and employment matters.

Robin also has experience advising and representing clients on human rights matters, including responses to applications before the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
