Josh Scheinert is an associate in the Toronto office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and a member of the Corporate Commercial Group. He practices international investment and trade law, with an emphasis on international investment arbitration. Josh has acted for clients in investor-state disputes launched under the NAFTA, and appeared before international arbitration tribunals. He can advise clients on how investor-protection regimes are impacted by state regulatory activity around environmental and labour activities. In addition, Josh has acted on trade remedy files before the Canadian International Trade Tribunal.
Josh can also advise clients across industries about expanding national and international regulations relating to business and human rights. He has provided advice to governments, international organizations, and NGOs on the opportunities for transnational business to play a role in securing the human rights of those impacted by its operations.
In addition to practice, Josh has been a visiting law professor in Gambia and India, where he taught courses on international and comparative law. He joined the Ontario bar after completing a judicial clerkship with Chief Justice Allan Lutfy of the Federal Court. His articles have been published in popular media and academic journals.
