Executive Summary

Cory Ryan is a partner in our Insurance and Tort Liability Group in our Calgary office. Cory practises in the area of civil litigation, with an emphasis on insurance and tort liability. He advises clients on personal injury, property damage, professional negligence and commercial host liability claims, as well as coverage issues.  Cory also has experience in foreclosure actions, contractual disputes, employment matters, and injunctive relief.

Cory has appeared before all levels of court including the Provincial Court, Court of Queen’s Bench, and the Court of Appeal.  He has also attended numerous judicial dispute resolutions and mediations where he has obtained satisfactory settlements of his clients’ claims.

Prior to joining BLG, Cory worked for a regional firm in Calgary, where he focused on civil litigation, as well as a litigation boutique in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

 

Representative Work

  • Successfully represented a client in obtaining judgment in excess of $450,000, in relation to a breach of contract and also successfully defended a counterclaim involving claims of breach of fiduciary duties, following a two week trial.
  • ​Successfully represented a client in a week-long injunctive relief hearing that involved allegations of breach of fiduciary duties and unfair competition. 
  • Involved in successfully representing a client in an appeal from a regulatory fishing offence that centred on the issues of a collateral attack and res judicata
  • Involved in a trial involving claims of professional negligence; the plaintiff claimed that both the hospital and doctor had failed to meet their standard of care in a wrongful birth claim. 
  • Involved in a recent trial claiming professional negligence and negligent misrepresentation in a property dispute.
  • Successfully represented a client in securing judgment and payment in relation to a mortgage that secured funds in excess of $6 million. 
  • Involved in a dispute over the distribution of the proceeds of the sale of property arising out of a fraudulent lending scheme in a large class action lawsuit.
  • Involved in a dispute regarding the amount owing by various guarantors to a lender after judgment had been obtained against them.
