Executive Summary

Laura Poppel is an associate in BLG's Corporate Commercial Litigation and Arbitration group in the Calgary office. Laura practices general commercial litigation, with a focus on oil and gas litigation, electricity market prosecutions, and representing financial institutions in banking litigation, including bills of exchange and Ponzi scheme claims. Laura also regularly represents clients involved in contractual and shareholder disputes, and disputes involving director and officer liability.

Laura has extensive experience with regulatory proceedings before the Alberta Utilities Commission has been lead counsel in several Provincial Court proceedings and Court of Queen's Bench hearings. Laura has also appeared before the Court of Appeal.

  • Acted as Co-Counsel to the Respondents in IntelliView Technologies Inc. v Badawy, 2018 ABCA 163.
  • Acted as Co-Counsel to the Applicants in IntelliView Technologies Inc. v Badawy, 2018 ABQB 961.
  • Acted as Co-Counsel for the Market Surveillance Administrator in Independent Power Producers' Society of Alberta v Independent System Operator (Alberta Electric System Operator), 2016 ABQB 133.
  • Assisted with BLG's representation of the Market Surveillance Administrator in Alberta Utilities Commission Proceeding No. 3110: Market Surveillance Administrator allegations against TransAlta Corporation et al., Mr. Nathan Kaiser and Mr. Scott Connelly.
  • Assisted with BLG's representation of the Market Surveillance Administrator in Alberta Utilities Commission Proceeding 21115: Application by the Market Surveillance Administrator Regarding the Publication of the Historical Trading Report.
  • Assisted with BLG's representation of the Market Surveillance Administrator in Alberta Utilities Commission Proceeding 22797: Applications to review and vary Decision 21115-D01-2017.
